Belleville, one of the oldest communities in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, was founded in 1818. Belleville is proud of its rich German heritage and its link with Paderborn, Germany through the "Sister Cities". This city of approximately 45,000 is the county seat with the beautiful Veteran's Memorial Fountain at the public square it's most famed attraction.

Belleville is noted for its fine schools, emphasizing basic skills and positive learning experiences. Belleville East and West High Schools, considered district #201, and Althoff Catholic High School provide quality education along with two junior high and nine elementary schools, which are district #118. There are also an additional 7 elementary schools servicing the area consisting of district #115, 119, 175, and 181. Belleville also offers several parochial and private school options such as the Governor French Academy (elementary, junior high and high grades), the Applause Academy (pre- school through 5th grade), and the Montessori School. Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) sits on the eastern edge of Belleville.  Belleville is also home to Lindenwood University.  To give home buyers a choice, Belleville has many new subdivisions, older homes, as well as fine homes of architectural note with many located in one of Belleville’s three historic districts – Old Belleville, Hexenbukel, and Oakland Historic Districts. The St. Clair County Historical Society, established in 1905, serves as important role in keeping history alive in Belleville. It has two house museums that are open to the public.

There are many events scheduled in Belleville throughout the year. The largest community event is Art on the Square. Ranked as #1 in the nation, it is held in May around the Veteran’s Memorial Fountain. The Deutchfest in June and Oktoberfest in September celebrate the German heritage of the area. The Chili Cook-Off in October, Gingerbread Walk during the Christmas Holiday Season, and the Candlelight Historic Tour are also strong traditions in Belleville.

Founded in 1958, the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is one of the largest outdoor shrines in North America and is a ministry of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, an order of Catholic Missionary priests and brothers. The shrine welcomes over 1 million visitors each year from throughout the United States and many foreign countries. During the Christmas season, the Way of Lights with over 1 million lights tells the Christmas Story as you drive through the beautiful grounds of the Shrine.

Belleville has five golf courses, one public swimming pool, and seven city parks, as well as a state of the art YMCA. Two progressive hospitals provide the latest in medical attention. This city is justly proud of its Philharmonic Society, fine retail stores and shopping centers throughout the city. Two new shopping centers have opened in Belleville in 2007. On the west side near the new Belleville West High School is Belleville Commons anchored by Home Depot, Target and PetSmart with many more shops being added. Also opened in 2007, is Greenmount Crossings anchored by Lowe’s and Super Wal-Mart located on the eastern edge of Belleville across from the Southwestern Illinois College.

Located six miles from Scott Air Force Base, Belleville is 40 minutes from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport with quick connections to five interstate highways. The Metro-Link light rail system reaches Southwestern Illinois College on the East edge of Belleville and connects all of Belleville to Lambert-St. Louis Airport and downtown St. Louis.
